ELECOM M-DT2URBK-G Trackball Mouse Review

I have a lot of pain in my wrist, not up to the carpal tunnel syndrome, but very sore when I use a normal mouse.

Switching between using my Wacom Intuos 5, Evoluent Upright ergo mouse, and my old Logitech Cordless Trackman on my Mac Pro running OS X (Mavericks), I use two 20-inch Apple displays and one 30-inch Apple display.

The Logitech Cordless Trackman is out of production, it doesn’t work properly and the reception is unreliable, so I was looking for another trackball. Also, the DPI is quite low, so tracking across multiple screens isn’t accurate.

I can’t use the Wacom tablet or Evoluent ergonomic mouse for a long time without a lot of pain, so I have to alternate them throughout the day. I mainly use Wacom for graphic and photo design, as well as a mouse, but the pen grip hurts after a while. The Evoluent is comfortable for most people, but unfortunately not good enough for me due to the need to “grab” the mouse and use my index finger as a left-click finger.

I am very happy with the M-DT2 so far, it is a very comfortable mouse that I can use all day long. For this trackball I don’t have to hold it, I don’t have to move my arm and I don’t have to use my index finger often. Even with all my screens, scrolling through different screens is very easy, very accurate, and convenient to use. My fingers, wrist, and arms hurt much less than with Wacom and Evoluent. I can wear the Elecom DT2 all day with minimal pain. I use my middle finger to scroll through the ball.

The only negative thing about this trackball with Mac is that the three function buttons on the top of the mouse DO NOT WORK, even with the Elecom Mac Mouse Assistant controller. The buttons are completely unmapped and the Elecom driver doesn’t work (search on Reddit, others on OS X have the same problem). People report that the Windows driver is fine, it is only the Mac driver that has problems.

So download USBOVERDRIVE for Mac instead and use it to map the other mouse buttons. BetterTouchTool doesn’t map some buttons for some reason, but USBOVERDRIVE does (it maps all the buttons next to the three function buttons).

I hope the Elecom Mac controller will one day actually work so I can use the function buttons, but I’m not betting on it, and even without the function buttons it’s still a great mouse that helps ease the pain.

The Elecom M-DT2 is certainly not the perfect trackball, despite being the newest trackball on the market. But after looking at all the others, it is still significantly better because of the ergonomics and the number of buttons.

Here’s my button configuration for the trackball (excluding the 3 function buttons as they don’t work on Mac OS X), mapped with USBOVERDRIVE
Left button: left mouse button
Right button: right-click
Tilt scroll wheel
Tilt-Up Button: Show Desktop
Tilt button: Displays mission control (expose)
Scroll wheel center button (by pressing the scroll wheel directly) – Show finder
Forward button: Go forward one page (in the search engine, browser, etc.)
Back button: go back one page (in the search engine, browser, etc.)

ELECOM M-DT2URBK-G Trackball Mouse Advantages:

Comfortable to use, much less painful than my Wacom or Evoluent tablet
DPI is decent and very accurate, especially for graphic design work (for photo work I still prefer my Wacom)
The trackball is smooth, accurate, and easy to turn.
The buttons are usually easy to press (I was hesitant about the button positions at first)
I don’t have to move my hand to move the mouse (this applies to all trackballs), also saves space.

ELECOM M-DT2URBK-G Trackball Mouse cons:

Elecom driver for Mac is useless, download USBOVERDRIVE instead
The 3 function buttons are useless because the Elecom controller is useless and the function buttons cannot be mapped using any other mouse mapping application.
The scroll wheel tilt clicks are a little hard to press, although they can still be used
It would be nice if the trackball was a bit bigger, especially since I have three screens

ELECOM M-DT2URBK-G Trackball Mouse of Conclusion:
